| BERG LARSEN SAXOPHONE
MOUTHPIECES |
Berg
originally made his name as a professional musician and whilst not working, he
could be found making reeds in Archer Street London. In 1945, he designed and
manufactured a range of ebonite mouthpieces for Clarinet and Saxophone which
later evolved into a range made out of stainless steel for an increased
lifespan. Although Berg died in 1972, his name lives on. Berg Larsen
mouthpieces still offer a wide variety of mouthpieces in various different
materials and styles whilst still employing the same traditional manufacturing
methods. Click here to

 |
BLACK EBONITE (hard rubber) is the
traditional material for mouthpieces and has been used since the very beginning
. |
 |
GRAINED EBONITE is a superior grade
ebonite with a beautiful grained effect. This mouthpiece has a warm tone with a
generally round sound. |
 |
STAINLESS STEEL mouthpieces were
developed for increased life and their different tonal quality. Because these
mouthpieces have a highly reflective finish, they produce a bright, more
edgy sound. The insert is made of high grade black ebonite. |
 |
BRONZE with the advent of new casting
techniques, it is now possible to manufacture mouthpieces from Bronze which is
widely used for bells and cymbals because of its resonant qualities. It is also
particularly resistant to tarnishing and extremely hard wearing. The insert is
made from attractive grained ebonite. |
 |
BULLET First introduced in 1998 the
initial production was immediately sold. A new concept in mouthpiece which
performs in the studio as well as on stage. Sweet and pure its free blowing
qualities will give you the volume you want and the edge you need.
Available in the original Bronze and now Stainless Steel. |
 |
DUCK BILL - Yes its back. After many
years Berg Larsen have started making the Duck Bill Tenor Saxophone mouthpieces
again. For those musicians who prefer a mouthpiece which gives a retro feel of
days gone by. |
 |
VINTAGE Yes, it's back, the very
first Berg Larsen Metal mouthpiece for Tenor Sax, in it's entire originality in
shape and sound, Berg Larsen "VINTAGE" from early 50's, both in Stainless Steel
and Bronze. Also known as the Scoopbill. |

| How to choose a Berg Larsen
mouthpiece |
|
 |
| When selecting a mouthpiece, there are a
number of factors to consider. |
|
|
1) Tip Opening The tip opening is the distance
between the tip of the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece, measured in
thousands of an inch. Generally speaking, the wider the tip opening, the softer
the reed that may be used. For most beginners a narrower tip opening will
result in a clearer tone and more consistent intonation. The tip
openings available are shown in the green section of the table below, with the
most popular ones shown in the red typeface. The tip openings shown in black
typeface are custom models and carry a 48.00 GB Pound
surcharge. |

2) Tone Chamber The degree of edge or
brightness the player obtains is dictated by the size of the tone chamber.
Referring to the diagram above, the more 'baffle' that is built into the tone
chamber, the more edge the tone will have. A '0' tone chamber will have the
most edge and a '3' will have a more mellow tone. Chamber number '3' is a
custom model and carries a 48.00 GB Pound surcharge. |
3) Length of facing The term 'SMS' or 'M'
indicates the choice of facing. The SMS, or French facing is usually shorter
with a steeper curve. The 'M' or American facing is slightly longer with a
flatter type curve. |
EXAMPLE The designation
100/0SMS for a Tenor Saxophone mouthpiece
indicates a medium-close tip opening, a brilliant tone chamber and a short
facing length. |
